Fitness enthusiasts across the country are scheduled to gather again in the first-ever Outdoor Challenge Philippines 2017, a much-anticipated outdoor event among athletes, to be held on November 18 at the CamSur Watersports Complex, Camarines Sur. But before that happens, participants are encouraged to undergo various physical exercises first to boost their mettle and stamina.
Outdoor Challenge is a brainchild of an annual trail running event organized by The North Face (TNF), called The North Face 100. This year, TNF —known for its authentic, innovative, and technically-advanced outdoor gears, apparel, and supplies— introduces an all-new format that goes beyond trail running race, as it now encompasses an expansive outdoor course which will feature several obstacles like mud-crawling, rock climbing, fallen tree hurdles, among others.
As part of the preparation, the fourth leg of the six-part Outdoor Training Sessions took place last Wednesday at the Recreational Outdoor Exchange, Bonifacio High Street, Taguig. Attended by fitness and outdoor enthusiasts, among which were runners, mountain climbers, hikers, and other athletes, it aimed to bond and motivate the fitness community to train for a purpose.
The session was led by Hong Kong-based fitness professional Ruben Payan Jr., the Master Trainer of TNF Asia-Pacific arm. Payan also founded Powerful Human, a movement that promotes wellness, active lifestyle, empowerment, and transformation. With his experience in the US Marine Corps, he is also a mountaineering expert who has climbed the Seven Summits or the highest points in every continent.
Prior to the warm-up routines and exercises of the Training Session, Payan discussed the fitness program of the Institute of Human Performance (IHP), a US-based fitness organization that focuses on functional approach in fitness training, whose Asia-Pacific arm was established by Payan.
Participants endured the training session which included isolation, running, planking, squats, leg jumps, caterpillar relay, and core exercises, among others. Senior Brand Associate of TNF Renz Angelo Que commended the determination and endurance of the fourth session’s participants. “We have a very dedicated group right now. Ruben even said to maintain this group, and try to keep this group intact so that we can train them for the next level, or even in a higher intensity training,” he said.
Que also noted the importance of participation in this kind of physically demanding event, as this is a preventive measure to avoid getting sick. “I think it’s important to become physically fit because your health is your number one priority. I think health should be your first investment,” he added.
The other two remaining legs of the Outdoor Training Sessions will happen on October 18 at the QC Memorial Circle and on October 25 at the ROX BHS, Taguig, both at 7:30 PM to 9:00 PM.
All these training sessions test the limit of the participants, but the trials ahead are expected to be tougher and more rigorous as Outdoor Challenge Philippines 2017 is comprised of adventure challenges in line with the nature-oriented philosophy of TNF, represented by four different economic zones in the racing course: earth, endurance, forest, and water.
