“Dark Horse” tackles the overlooked and underrated in Philippine sports. The first series puts the spotlight on Philippine Underwater Hockey (Part 1: The Stakes).
Last September, the Philippine Underwater Hockey team made a splash at the 2017 Asian Underwater Hockey Championships (AUHC), held on September 22-24, in Beijing, China, bagging three major awards: GOLD for Elite Women’s Team, SILVER for Elite Men’s, and TOP SCORER for Elite Women’s Nadja Buenafe.
Going up against the best underwater hockey teams in Asia for the seventh time in tournament history Team Philippines remains as one of the best, if not the best in the region since the AUHC began in 2007.
Amid the group accolades, one particular Philippine Team member, Nadja Buenafe, scored 24 goals in the tournament, earning her the Top Scoring Female award for the 2nd time in a row, also proving that underwater hockey is an ideal Filipino sport despite only standing at 4’10”.
MBody would like to thank team captains Chari Ongyanco and Roy Arayata, PUHC President Dennis Valdes, and 3P Underwater Hockey Club members present at the shoot: JV Lim, Ines Templo, Milo Tan, Edric Ochoa, Kelvin Tan, and Nadja Buenafe
