Mainly caused by staying in the same position for a prolonged period without enough movement, a condition called the Office Syndrome is common among office workers who spend many hours sitting in front of a computer.
Office Syndrome, if left without treatment, can lead to serious medical conditions like paralysis, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and even mental health illnesses.
According to David Foote, Chief-Executive-Officer of the world’s first-ever spa application called Zennya, Office Syndrome is attributed to many unhealthy working habits of desk workers, such as sitting down eight hours a day. He added that this can lead to constant muscle contraction and pain, which may trigger headaches, shoulder and back pain, numb fingers and arms, weak eyesight, etc.
“It’s a global phenomena. It’s happening everywhere. But I think one of the challenges, in the Philippines, in particular, is one of the things that offsets sitting is walking, good diet, good nutrition, access to exercise. Here, there’s not a lot of place to walk. Sidewalks are congested and difficult. Exercise, equipment is expensive. Access to gyms is limited. So I think it’s probably worse in the Philippines than many other areas,” Foote said.
With this, Zennya now offers the Office Syndrome Therapy, along with other quality in-home massages provided by trained therapists at the clients’ home, hotel, condo, or office.
Zennya’s Office Syndrome Therapy is a uniquely designed service which is part-massage, and part-physical therapy. Foote said that it is specifically targeted to work on issues that are associated with sitting down for a long period of time, like hypertension, carpal tunnel syndrome, pain and migraine surrounding the neck and shoulders, and other postural stress injuries that occur from sitting. But what sets it apart from the usual therapies is that it can be performed in a chair while either you are at home or office, so it doesn’t interfere with your day.
“We designed the service so that it can happen as part of your day rather than interrupting your day,” Foote said.
The training of the therapists who perform the service goes beyond massage, “They have to be able to identify specific trigger point areas to know how to work them in many different ways. You know, often when you look at the areas of tension that are associated with Office Syndrome postural stress, there’s maybe a dozen different specific trigger point areas, they have to know where they are, and how to access them, and how to manipulate them,” Foote explained.
Office Syndrome Therapy can be painful, as the target areas are usually inflamed. But Zennya therapists assure that pain is immediately followed with relief, allowing the person to move more freely and have better range of motion.
However, Foote clarifies that although the Office Syndrome Therapy by Zennya is an effective treatment to this prevalent condition, one still has to put in the work outside of the treatment as well. Regular exercising and stretching, standing up from the seat every 30 minutes, and walking can all help.
