When you think of the life of an actor, it’s easy to think about money, fame and all things glamorous. They appear flawless on screen as they are expected to. However, preparing for a role can be really taxing both for the mind and the body. Some roles require dramatic physical transformations to effectively play the part, which means tons of discipline and hard work that we rarely see on camera.
These six power women proved that there’s so much more behind their pretty faces, and that if you want the part, you should be willing to work for it.
1. Anne Curtis for ‘BuyBust’
Buy Bust is the latest project of filmmaker Erik Matti, which is set to go on international stage this year.
The film features Anne Curtis in her most physically-challenging role yet where she plays a drug enforcement agent who gets embroiled in a buy bust operation gone wrong.
The It Girl has been sharing her preparations on her Instagram where she’s seen spending long hours on Pekiti Tirsia Kali training, pistol handling, and even spending time with the Scout Rangers to be able to play the fight scenes without body doubles. Pekiti Tirsia Kali is a combat-oriented system specific to Filipino Martial Arts which has been adopted as the preferred combative training program by elite military and law enforcement units around the world.
On her Instagram, Anne said: “This is the beauty of petiki-tirsia kali when you’re disarmed of an actual weapon, you can use anything you can find to defend yourself because YOU become the WEAPON.”
2. Gal Gadot for ‘Wonder Woman’
Gal Gadot has mesmerized the entire planet as the latest Amazonian goddess. With her lean and sculpted physique, there’s no doubt that she prepared intensely for the role. A superhero body like that doesn’t happen overnight. It took Gal six months of rigorous fitness routine to prepare for the film.
She reportedly worked out for six hours a day which includes two hours gym work, two hours fight choreography, and two hours of horseback riding, which she described on Live with Kelly and Ryan to be ‘super hard’ than it seems.
While she didn’t have a very restrictive diet, her food choices were mostly comprised of half greens, half protein and whole foods.
On days she doesn’t work out, she enjoys rock climbing and paddle boarding, which both require and develop strong core. She was also a basketball player, on top of being Miss Israel 2004.
Is there anyone more appropriate to be called Wonder Woman? We don’t think so.
3. Uma Thurman for ‘Kill Bill’
Who will ever forget Uma Thurman’s kick-ass moves in the cult classic film Kill Bill? The fight scenes, especially between Uma Thurman and Vivica A. Fox’s characters, are probably still in your dreams.
To train for Kill Bill, Uma took Wushu martial arts training, which helped her lose 25 pounds and made her more athletic. Vivica also revealed that both her and Uma trained for eight hours a day, five days a week during the first three months of preparation. Uma also traveled to China for a month to further her training.
To maintain her physique, Uma does yoga and Pilates on top of other outdoor exercises like horseback riding, skiing and snowboarding. She also follows Paleolithic Diet, also known as Caveman Diet, in which she avoids all dairy and gluten.
“TRAINING GIVES ME A KIND OF PLEASURE FROM THE PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AND EXERTING MYSELF AND PUSHING MYSELF THAT I’D NEVER HAD BEFORE.”
– Uma Thurman
4. Hilary Swank for ‘Million Dollar Baby’
To play the female boxer Maggie Fitzgerald, Hilary had to work out for five hours a day, six days a week for three whole months. Her training was supervised by Hector Roca at Gleason’s Gym in New York. She also had to consume at least 210 grams of protein daily and 4000 kcal of total food consumption per day. To give you an idea of how much protein that is, Hilary had to eat an average of 60 egg whites a day. Her eating was scheduled every hour and a half, where she ended up drinking the egg whites because she just couldn’t eat eight to 12 eggs in one sitting. She also had to wake up in the middle of the night to drink protein shakes, and strictly slept for nine hours daily. With this routine, she was able to put on 23 pounds of pure muscles.
Long after playing Maggie and bagging the Golden Globe Best Actress award, Hilary Swank remains our #fitspiration as she shares her inspiring fitness routine (and impressive physique at 43!) on her Instagram.
5. Charlize Theron for ‘Atomic Blonde’
Charlize has repeatedly played powerful characters, including Mad Max’s Imperator Furiosa and Cipher of the Fate of the Furious. In her latest show of skills in Atomic Blonde, Theron played an undercover MI6 agent sent to Berlin during the height of the Cold War.
With much dedication to the role, she learned to fight on camera through long hours of training which includes shadow boxing, bag work, core, and all things MMA. She worked under the supervision of a team of eight trainers to learn a mix of martial arts, boxing, and wrestling, while building her strength and agility.
Her trainer also revealed that he designed a workout for Charlize that is ballet-based and works every muscle group.
The 5’10” actress also continues to do two 90-minute sessions of power yoga a week along with two spin classes up to four times.
6. Liza Soberano for ‘Darna’
Completing the list is our very own Liza Soberano, who will play the most coveted role of local superhero Darna.
Liza recently wowed the public with her six-pack abs in an ASAP number in Toronto. When asked how she achieved her Darna physique, she said “Well, you have to work out and maintain discipline!”
Liza means it. For the past two months, she has been training intensively under the supervision of celebrity trainer Bok Santos to sculpt her core. She’s also been working on her speed and endurance with early morning runs.
Needless to say, everyone’s eyes are on the iconic sexy superhero, and Liza seemed determined not to disappoint.
