As the summer comes in full swing and you’re stuck in the city for some reason, why not fancy all these sports and fitness events happening in the month of May for a change? Piña coladas are always optional anyway.
1. ‘Live Boxing Month’ on TV
Launched by ESPN5, “Live Boxing Month” features a series of boxing shows that Filipinos can catch in May.
On May 13 (Sunday), the sports television channel will be airing nonstop fights live, starting as early as 10 AM, with the telecast of the WBA lightweight championship between Venezualan Jorge Linares and Ukranian Vasyl Lomachenko. Then at 3 PM, the spotlight turns to the ring set up at SM North EDSA Skydome, for the “Survival Instinct” show, featuring the top fighters from Joven Sports Promotions, the camp that handles Jerwin Ancajas. Headlined by Rio Olympian Mark Anthony Barriga, AJ “Bazooka” Banal, and the comebacking “Marvelous” Marvin Sonsona, expect this as a special day that Filipino boxing fans will not easily forget.
And if that’s not enough, ESPN5 also has other days covered, with their airing of the Greatest Fights every Tuesdays and Thursdays, and the classic film Rocky 1 to 5 showing every Saturdays all within May.
Last but definitely not the least, the much-anticipated Las Vegas all-Filipino championship bout between IBF super flyweight titleholder Jerwin Ancajas and mandatory challenger Jonas Sultan will also be aired live on the sports network on May 26. The fight is being bannered as a historic one for the Philippines, as it’s the first all-Filipino title fight in 93 years.
2. Barangay Liga
Ongoing since March, the Barangay MILO Liga is said to have been launched in line with MILO Philippines’ mission to get more Filipino youth into sports.
Especially since it’s their summer vacation, children nowadays are prone to staying indoors playing with their video games all day long. The lack of safe and fully functioning sports facilities nearby also turns the children away from the idea of playing outdoors and getting into sports. With their Barangay Liga program, MILO is determined to rehabilitate these facilities—repaint and restore basketball courts and supply new equipment—and mount events to encourage kids in every barangay to be more active and at the same time, develop the deemed key traits to become successful athletes and members of society: discipline, confidence, and team work.
Known for the brand’s other youth-oriented sports programs, such as the Olympics, Sports Clinics, and even the equally new Champ Camp (to start in June 2018), MILO Philippines is making sure the Barangay Liga spreads out nationwide. Already, it has reached 100 barangays as north as Baguio and as south as General Santos City, with proper coordination from their respective local government units. Come next summer, Barangay Liga aims to double that number.
3. New Fitbit Features
Boasting of its newest additions to the already advanced health and fitness features other Fitbit models carry, the very light and water-resistant (up to 50 meters) Fitbit Versa officially launches worldwide at a remarkably competitive price, available in the Philippines now with the starting price of Php13,890.
However, the true highlight drops in May, with cool new Fitbit Versa and Ionic features launching, such as the quick reply capabilities for Android phone users, the innovative female health tracking, updated Fitbit Coach workouts, and automatic sleep stages tracking.
With the inclusion of quick replies in the array of Fitbit features, the device transitions from being a mere accessory, to a legitimate smart device, as it allows the user to send up to five custom pre-populated quick replies to text messages and messenger apps.
Another feature worth noting is the female health tracker, which aims to organize data on the monthly cycles and symptoms, thereby further educating the female users of their body mechanics and patterns.
Fitbit Versa is available today in major retail stores, including Digital Walker, Globe, Liberty, Runnr, and Lazada. The Fitbit Ace for kids, meanwhile, will be available in the second quarter of 2018.
