Following the incident that transpired last July 2, during the 2019 FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers between the Gilas Pilipinas and Australia Boomers, world governing basketball body FIBA on Thursday issued its sanctions to the teams, officials, and players involved in the ugly brawl.
The brawl occurred with 4:01 left in the third quarter of the game, when Boomers player Daniel Kickert elbowed Roger Pogoy in retaliation to the Gilas player’s hit on his teammate, Chris Goulding. That escalated things quickly for it prompted benched Gilas players to join the tussle and come to their team’s defense.
In a press release, FIBA expresses its condemnation to any form of violence. “Respect, sportsmanship, and professionalism are expected from the players, coaches, officials, and all other stakeholder at every game,” FIBA states.
Aside from the bans and suspensions, FIBA also issued fines to the respective basketball organizations which will be used to support the “Basketball for Good” social program launched by the International Basketball Foundation (IBF).
