History was made as Filipino athletes finished their campaign at 19th place in the 18th Asian Games, exceeding their previous 22nd ranking in the overall medal tally of Asia’s biggest quadrennial multi-sport competition.Clinching 4 golds, 2 silvers, and 15 bronzes, Team Philippines brought home a total of 21 medals from 31 sporting competitions.
The country’s gold count quadrupled after Filipina representatives dominated the women’s category of weightlifting, golf, and skateboarding.
Professional weighlifter Hidilyn Diaz bested 11 other competitors in the Women’s 53-kilograms event held on August 20. The 27-year-old Zamboanguena handed the Philippines its first gold.
On August 26, 17-year-old golfer Yuka Saso delivered PH its second gold after winning the Women’s Individual Golf event. Saso represented the country with teammates Kaye Louis Go and Bianca Pagdangan. The team also topped the Women’s Golf category and was awarded with another gold. Padangan, meanwhile, won a bronze (individual play).
Filipinas continued the golden strike with the victory of Margielyn Didal in the Skateboarding Street event held on August 29. Skateboarding made its debut in the Asian Games this year and 19-year-old Didal is now part of its history. The Cebuana’s triumph added another gold medal in the Philippines’ collection of three.
Other sports where Pinoys reigned include boxing, Judo, Pencak Silat, Taekwondo, Wushu, cycling, Jiu-jitsu, and karate.
The 16-day event was held in Jakarta-Palembang, Indonesia, from August 18 to September 2, 2018.
