4 YEARS. 3 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS. 2-time MOST VALUABLE PLAYER.
Three years after his first visit in the country, two-time NBA MVP Stephen Curry returns to the Philippines for his Asia tour, which runs from September 7 to 12. Stopping first in the bustling city of Manila, Curry is also set to promote the yellow exclusive colorway of his Curry 5 footwear by Under Armour.
Young hoopers across the region get to witness Curry’s skills, and learn from his work ethic and will-to-win attitude inside and outside the court.
During the press conference with journalists from around Southeast Asia, held in Kerry Sports Manila, BGC, Taguig, the 30-year-old Golden State Warriors point guard says that his comeback in Manila is something that he has been looking forward to.
“There is so much support here in the Philippines and all of Southeast Asia for what we do on the court, what I do, and what I represent[…] It’s a nice time to be here in Manila, to see everybody here, to share my successes,” says the two-time FIBA World Cup gold medalist.
After meeting the press, Curry graced the Mall of Asia Arena for the Under Armour 3×3 Championship.
Also participating in today’s festivities were icons of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA); stars PJ Simon, Troy Rosario, Mark Barroca, and Poy Erram took part in a competition closely resembling the NBA All-Star Weekend Skills Challenge. Simon bested the three to face Curry in the final round.
In a memorable turn, Magnolia Hotshots guard Simon outdid the Dubs sharpshooter in the relay. “It was a dream come true,” Simon says in jest on his victory.
Curry was also joined by father Dell, a former swingman who had played in the NBA with the Charlotte Hornets and the Toronto Raptors. The father-son duo made quick work of other PBA pairings in an exhibition called “Father-Son Shootout.”
“To inspire the next generation in the game of basketball, that’s what it’s all about,” Curry reminds his Filipino fans after the exhibition games.
Those who missed Stephen Curry on his first day still get the chance to see him as he will lead the sportsmanship oath-taking of University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 81 athletes in the opening ceremonies tomorrow, at MOA Arena.
