It wasn’t only North and South Korea–which competed as a unified team in some events–that made history in the Asian Para Games 2018, recently concluded in Indonesia. The Philippines also chronicled a never-before feat as Filipino para-athletes clinched their first ever gold medals.
Props to chess champion Sander Severino and swimmer Ernie Gawilan, the Philippines ranked 11th out of 43 countries and brought home a total of 29 medals: 10 golds, 8 silvers, and 11 bronzes. This is a great improvement from its 23rd place finish at the 2014 para-sports tournament.
Other sporting events where the 57-member contingent also emerged victorious were cycling, ten pin bowling, table tennis, and powerlifting. This only proves that people with disability are just as able as those without.
Congratulations, team Philippines. Mabuhay ang lakas ng atletang Pinoy!
