Japanese Yosuke Saruta is the new Strawweight World Champion after a five-round split decision against Team Lakay’s Joshua Pacio in the main event of ONE Championship: Eternal Glory, held in Jakarta, Indonesia, Saturday night, January 19.
Pacio clinched the belt in the Conquest of Heroes event held in September last year.
Prior to the main match of Pacio and Saruta, the highly anticipated rematch between Filipino Edward Kelly and Singaporean Christian Lee also favored the foe via first round ground-and-pound TKO.
The controversial first encounter of the two martial artists, which happened in ONE: Beyond the Horizon also in September 2018, ended with Lee’s disqualification loss after executing an illegal suplex knockout.
Meanwhile, hometown advantage didn’t come into play as Robin “The Ilonggo” Catalan overpowered his Indonesian foe Stefer Rahardian via unanimous decision victory in his non-title strawweight bout.
Despite this, Philippines remains to be one of the strongest contenders in the ONE league with four world championship titles.
