Filipinos’ obsession with beauty pageants gets more intense with the latest victory of Philippines’ Karen Gallman as Miss Intercontinental 2018.
Not long after Catriona Gray’s coronation as the new Miss Universe, Gallman made history as the first Filipina to have been crowned Miss Intercontinental, a 47-year-old international pageant which gathered more than 80 contestants from around the globe, Saturday, January 26, at the Mall of Asia Arena, Manila.
It was also the first time for the Philippines to host the competition.
In Miss Intercontinental’s history, Philippines has always made it to the final cut, finishing 2nd runner-up in 2014 and 1st runner-up in 2015 and 2017.
The crown remained elusive until Gallman’s victory, which is ironic in relation to her answer during the Q and A portion. Asked about how she would define success, the 25-year-old Filipino-Australian responds: “For me, success is not just about winning in life,” oblivious that she would eventually emerge triumphant.
She continues by saying that success is also about setting smaller goals and achieving them by working hard, and amidst all these is keeping a sense of gratitude.
Gallman has always shown determination to realize her dreams. Prior to the competition, in an exclusive interview with MBody, she explains what makes a Filipina strong as a candidate, and as a woman in general.
“A Filipina is strong when she embraces herself and her individuality unapologetically. She fights against expectations and she knows she has obstacles along her path but that doesn’t let her define who she is. When she fails, she gets back up, and she continuously moves forward,” Gallman says.
The newly-crowned queen advocates for better education amongst poor kids in the rural areas of the country.
