The 2019 National Basketball Association All-Star Game (NBA-ASG) took place last February 17, 2019 in Charlotte, North Carolina in celebration of the best players of the league. It was the second straight season without the Easter Conference and Western Conference matchup.
The NBA used the revamped format selecting players regardless of conference; however, the process for selecting the 24 All-Stars remained the same, with 12 top vote-getters of each conference earning spots.
Which team won, and how they did it
The two team captains were Lebron James of Los Angeles Lakers and Giannis Antetokounmpo of Milwaukee Bucks. Coming back from a 20-point deficit, Team LeBron rallied past Team Giannis to win the game—by means of a barrage of three-point shots. James and company made a total of 35 three-point shots to set a new All-Star record and pull away for the win, with the final score at 178-164. Kevin Durant was named MVP of the ASG.
In other parts of the All-Star Weekend, Jayson Tatum of Boston Celtics won the skills match with a half-court shot, Joe Harris of Brooklyn Nets won the three-point contest, and Oklahoma Thunder guard Hamidou Diallo was adjudged Dunk Contest winner for recalling Vince Carter by stuffing his elbow into the rim.
What the ASG showed about the current NBA game
San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich has said that the beauty of the NBA is gone, because it’s all three-point shots now. Anthony Davis played for about five minutes in the ASG and still made a three-point shot. When even the big men (with the exception, probably, of Steven Adams and Rudy Gobert) are shooting threes, what is left to impress us with? Perhaps there is still some beauty left to the game when someone like Paul George completes a four-point play—to win a regular-season game.
Looking forward to the NBA playoffs – and beyond
It’s back to even tougher competition after the All-Star Weekend (that’s why it’s often referred to as the All-Star Break). While Lebron James enjoyed playing with his fellow superstars, he will not be happy if the LA Lakers fail to make the playoffs. After the playoffs and the Finals, free agency beckons to superstars with expiring contracts. Everything is up in the air when players love to compete; with that in mind, some of us still love the modern NBA game, three-point shots and all.
