Among the millions of Filipino basketball fans, three avid NBA supporters have been featured by NBA Philippines to tell their stories of how much they love the sport.
Launched late last month in the Facebook page of what’s tagged as the home of the Pinoy Hoop Nation, #RepublikaNgPilipinas has proven that basketball is more than just a game, and that there is more to NBA than being just the world’s premiere men’s basketball league.
The campaign is the first-of-its-kind video series that, by far, features three stories.
In the first episode released on March 28, titled Spur of the Moment, we’ve been introduced to Serge Gabriel, a die-hard fan who travelled all the way to San Antonio, Texas to meet NBA legend and his personal idol, Manu Ginobili.
It isn’t the first time that Gabriel made rounds online. Last year, for the same reason he is featured today, he has gone for a sign he brought to that game which wrote: “All I want for my birthday is a picture with Manu Ginobili.” Lo and behold, Ginobli took notice of the sign and Gabriel went home with their picture together.
On April 3, we’ve witnessed how two people’s shared affinity for basketball sneakers transformed into an eventual romance. Titled as Perfect Pair, now-couple JQ and Barbie Quizan own roughly 400 pairs of shoes—majority of which are Jordans. Their fascination with the Jordan collection is in homage to Michael Jordan’s historic career and to their ‘80s upbringing.
More than watching the games together, JQ and Barbie are also fastidious on what the players’ footwear are—so much so that when they got married, the wedding theme revolved around sneakers. Did we mention that the proposal was done during a live Lakers-Jazz game? Yes, that’s how much of a fan they are.
Only days ago, on April 9, we’ve known a full-blooded Filipino who’s become an NBA Champion—at least for the kind of basketball game he plays. Titled as Most Valuable Gamer, the third video release tells the story of a former high school varsity athlete, Custer Galas, who is now an E-Sports champion.
“Parang NBA talaga siya,(NBA E-Sports League)” tells Galas who pays heed to researching about which teams to choose, and what plays to use—or even master. In fact, he’s competed internationally and takes pride on representing the country in the fast-growing industry of E-Sports.
Undeniably, Philippines has one of the biggest NBA fanbases in the world. From watching the games either on television screens or on the courtside, to the actual playing of the sport even in makeshift courts, Filipinos prove to be among the most hardcore ones.
NBA Philippines wants you to be part of #RepublikaNgNBA by sharing your most-prized NBA memorabilia on Instagram with the same hashtag. Certainly, wearing your favorite team’s jersey and acquiring some NBA merchandise tell something about you as a fan. Now’s the time to tell your story.
